12/13/18 - 7:45 pm - UPDATE FROM SUPT. GREATHEAD

Good evening, This is Mark Greathead, Superintendent of the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District, with an update regarding today’s threat.

It has been confirmed, through the Brownstown Police Department, that the individual that made the threat, and the phone from which the threat was made, is well out of state and does not pose an immediate threat, and school will be open tomorrow, Friday, December 14.

In partnership with both Brownstown PD and the Woodhaven Police Department, we will have patrol cars visible at all of our schools at the start of the day tomorrow.  This is meant as a reassurance and should not alarm you.

Again, working with the assistance and guidance of the Brownstown Police Department, all schools in the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District will be open tomorrow, December 14.

Original message from Supt. Greathead:

Today, after-school, a WHS student, while still in the building, received a threat, via text, from someone outside of the district.

Even though this was after-school, we immediately put WHS in lockdown.  We also put Wegienka Elementary School, where the WHS student had a younger sibling, into lockdown as well.

Brownstown Police Department assisted both locations in safely evacuating those schools.

All after-school activities within the school district have been cancelled for Thursday evening, December 13.

At this time, I am still waiting for information on the status of the individual that made the threat.

I will provide an update by 8:30 p.m. this evening regarding the status of school for tomorrow.

If I have information from our law enforcement partners that the individual that made the threat no longer poses a danger to our students, we will have school tomorrow.

If I don’t have that reassurance by that time, out of an abundance of caution, I will close all schools in the WBSD for tomorrow.

ATTENTION WARRIOR FAMILIES:  Our District Calendar erroneously states that winter break begins on Friday, December 21st. December 21st is a FULL DAY of school and winter break begins at the END of the day. Please help us spread the word to all Warrior families!

Kindergarten Enrollment Information
Parents may enroll a child who resides in the school district in kindergarten if the child is at least 5 years of age on September 1 of the school year of enrollment. If a child does not meet the minimum age requirement, but will turn 5 years of age not later than December 1 of that school year, the district could enroll the child for that school year if the parent or legal guardian notifies the district in writing that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year.

We look forward to welcoming our youngest students in the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District for the 2018-19 school year.

Early/Middle College Program   Not only can WBSD students earn their high school diploma but they can also earn an associate degree one year after completing high school. In partnership with the Wayne County Community College District, students may now pursue a tuition-free associate degree while attending high school. Our first cohort of students began taking classes at Wayne County's Taylor campus in September 2017. We are now into our third cohort with over 100 students well on their way to earning an associate degree. For more information on this one-of-a-kind program, visit Early/Middle College.

  District Water Testing Results
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District, as a proactive measure, contracted Arch Environmental Group to conduct drinking water tests for lead. AEG tested "first draw" and drinking water samples in all eight of the district's school buildings. We're pleased to report that water from all of the outlets tested well below levels established by the Environmental Protection Agency.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff has always remained our top priority, so we are obviously pleased with the water resting results," said Superintendent Mark Greathead. "Arch Environmental has informed us that no further action is required and we would like to thank them for the thorough testing of the drinking water in our buildings."
